Why Autumn Is One of the Best Times to Have Your Gutters Cleaned

Autumn is one of the times of year when your guttering really starts to earn its keep. After months of relatively dry weather, falling leaves, roof moss and other debris can quickly begin to collect inside gutters. Add heavier autumn rain into the mix and what looked like a small amount of debris can suddenly become a blockage.

At S&E Cleaning Services, we clean gutters throughout the year, but autumn is always an important time to think about getting them checked and cleared. The problem is that most homeowners rarely see what is actually sitting inside their gutters until something starts going wrong. Water begins overflowing, rainwater runs down the outside wall, a downpipe stops flowing properly or water starts appearing somewhere it should not. By that point, the gutter may already be heavily restricted.

Why Gutters Become Blocked

Gutters are designed to collect rainwater from the roof and direct it safely into the drainage system. The problem is that rainwater is not the only thing that ends up inside them. We often find:

  • Leaves
  • Moss
  • Twigs
  • Seeds
  • Dirt
  • Silt
  • Roof debris
  • Plant growth

Moss is something we regularly find in large quantities. During warmer and drier periods, moss growing on roof tiles can dry out and become loose. Pieces gradually break away and work their way down the roof until they eventually land in the gutter. One piece of moss might not cause much trouble. But when this happens across an entire roof, the gutter can slowly start filling up.

Then autumn arrives.

The Combination of Moss, Leaves and Heavy Rain

This is where problems can develop quickly. Dry moss sitting inside a gutter can absorb water and become much heavier. Leaves can then collect around it, creating a dense mass of organic material. Rainwater still needs somewhere to go. If the gutter or downpipe becomes restricted, water can begin backing up and overflowing over the edge.

A gutter does not necessarily need to be completely blocked before you notice a problem either. Even a partially restricted gutter can struggle during a period of heavy rain. That is why preventative gutter cleaning makes much more sense than waiting for water to start pouring over the side.

What Happens When Gutters Overflow?

Overflowing gutters are easy to dismiss as an inconvenience, but gutters are there for an important reason. They are designed to move significant amounts of rainwater away from your property. When that water is no longer following the correct route, it may begin running across other parts of the building.

Depending on the property and location of the blockage, this can contribute to problems around:

  • Fascias
  • Soffits
  • External walls
  • Brickwork
  • Render
  • Doors and windows
  • Ground around the property

It can also create unsightly staining. The aim of cleaning the gutter is simply to make sure rainwater has a clear route through the system again.

Why Autumn Is Such an Important Time

More leaves are falling.
Properties surrounded by trees can see a significant amount of leaf debris enter the guttering over a relatively short period. Even properties without large trees immediately next to them can collect windblown leaves.

Roof moss may already be sitting in the gutters
A lot of the moss we remove has not fallen into the gutter that week. It has accumulated gradually over time. Autumn rainfall can expose a problem that has been developing for months.

Rainfall becomes more important
A gutter that appeared to be coping during lighter summer showers may behave very differently when subjected to prolonged or heavier rain.

Winter is approaching
Clearing the gutter before the worst of the winter weather gives the system the best chance of doing its job properly through the wetter months.

Should You Wait Until All the Leaves Have Fallen?

Not necessarily. If your gutter is already heavily restricted or overflowing, there is little benefit in waiting. It should be dealt with. For properties surrounded by mature trees, it may sometimes make sense to have gutters checked later in autumn after the majority of leaves have fallen.

As a general rule, we recommend having gutters cleaned at least once a year. Properties surrounded by trees, roofs with heavy moss growth, or sites that collect debris more quickly may benefit from more frequent cleaning.

There is no single schedule that suits every house, so the condition of the property and its surroundings should always be taken into account. The important thing is not to ignore the gutter indefinitely.

How Do We Clean Gutters at S&E?

We use our professional SkyVac gutter vacuum system to remove moss, leaves, silt and other debris from inside the guttering. The system allows us to work from ground level on many properties using specialist lightweight poles and powerful vacuum equipment.

The SkyVac is particularly useful for removing loose material such as:

  • Moss
  • Leaves
  • Silt
  • General organic debris
  • Small weeds and plant growth

For more difficult properties, or where access requirements are different, the cleaning method can be adapted accordingly.

Every gutter clean includes a full camera inspection and report on completion, allowing us to confirm that the gutters are clear and free flowing and giving the customer additional peace of mind.

Ground Level Gutter Cleaning

Ground Level Gutter Cleaning

One of the big advantages of modern professional gutter cleaning equipment is the ability to clean many gutters without repeatedly working from ladders.

Our SkyVac system uses lightweight poles to reach the gutter from ground level and, where access and site conditions allow, can reach gutters at heights of up to 40ft. This allows the operator to work around many parts of the property while debris is removed through the vacuum system.

Not every property is identical, and access always needs to be assessed properly, but modern equipment has made professional gutter cleaning safer and more efficient on many homes.

What Can We Find Inside a Gutter?

Some gutters contain little more than a layer of silt. Others are completely packed with vegetation. We regularly come across gutters containing large pieces of roof moss, compacted leaves and even small plants that have begun growing inside the debris.

Once enough organic material builds up, a gutter can effectively start behaving like a narrow planter. That is why the outside appearance of a gutter can be misleading. From ground level it might look perfectly normal. Inside can be a completely different story.

Signs Your Gutters May Need Cleaning

You do not always need specialist knowledge to spot the early warning signs. Keep an eye out for:

  • Water overflowing during rainfall
  • Plants or moss visibly growing from the gutter
  • Water running down external walls
  • Downpipes that appear to be flowing poorly
  • Sections of gutter holding standing water
  • Visible debris above the gutter line
  • Staining around fascias or walls

If you notice any of these, it is worth having the gutter checked.

What About Fascias and Soffits?

Gutter cleaning and fascia and soffit cleaning are two different services. Clearing the gutter means removing the material inside so water can flow properly. Cleaning the outside of the gutter, fascia and soffit is more cosmetic and removes the dirt, algae and staining that can build up on the external surfaces.

Customers often choose to have both completed around the same time, particularly if the outside of the roofline has become heavily discoloured. The results can make a noticeable difference to the appearance of the property.

Preventative Maintenance Is Usually Easier

Like many areas of property maintenance, gutters are much easier to deal with before there is an obvious problem. You do not need to wait until rainwater is pouring over the edge. A routine clean can remove accumulated debris and get everything flowing again before the wetter weather really tests the system. It is a relatively simple bit of maintenance that is very easy to forget because the gutters sit above eye level. Unfortunately, out of sight often means out of mind. Until it starts raining.
